Billions of dollars are wasted each year on ill conceived or poorly executed plans to incorporate information technology into business practices. There exists an achievement gap between the visionary strategies that companies nominally aspire to and the operating performance that they actually attain. In this book, Severance and Passino consider the nature of information-based business transformation projects as major organizational change events and offer prescriptive advice to the general manager for getting at and eliminating the root causes of their implementation failures. The authors provide the leader with a framework of organizational change that places the problems of change into a context so that they can be effectively addressed. The framework consists of two models. One describes the dimensions in which a business and its operations might change as a result of strategic choices. The second defines the sequence of activities that should be followed to accomplish these changes. Throughout the book, Severance and Passino use a composite hypothetical case study (GMI). The GMI case is the description of a hypothetical corporation in which actual facts and events from ten corporate research sites have been masked and then blended together. The composite case offers a succinct persentation of situations, issues and dilemmas uncovered on a recurrent basis. The purpose of the UMBS Management Series is to provide accessible, practical and cutting-edge solutions to the most critical challenges facing business people today. The books provide concepts and tools for those people who seek to make a significant difference in their organizations. Drawing on the research and experience of faculty at the University of Michigan Business School, each book stretches thinking while providing practical, focused and innovative solutions.
