Difficult times demand good leadership, and what better source to turn to than someone who has reached the pinnacle of one of the most grueling, pressure-filled professions in the world? Someone who continues to strive for excellence well past the age when others have scaled back their lives and expectations. Someone whose life is a model of perseverance, patience, intelligence, innovation and, most of all, leadership skills developed over the course of four decades. Hall of Fame basketball coach Dr. Jack Ramsay is that someone, and Dr. Jack’s Leadership Lesson’s Learned From a Lifetime in Basketball is the distillation of 40 years worth of successful teaching and coaching. During more than a half-century of involvement in basketball as a player and coach, Ramsay has kept pace with the sweeping changes that have engulfed the sport and has thrived by adapting much as a businessman must adapt to a changing market or an individual must adapt to a mid-career job change or a loss of a loved one. He has coached and worked with some of the greatest athletes in the world, and developed a keen insight into how to draw the most out of them and out of all of his players. However, the lessons and principals of leadership contained in Dr. Jack’s Leadership Lessons Learned From a Lifetime in Basketball go far beyond the TV studio and basketball court. The book offers concrete examples on subjects such as how to motivate colleagues and subordinates alike, how to know when to throw logic out the window and go with your gut instincts, how to stay true to yourself while developing a leadership style, how to lead by example, when to step back and how to communicate effectively. Dr. Jack ‘s life has been so much more than seven decades of perfecting the pick-and-roll and other on-court plays. Rather, his life has been spent learning (and teaching) how to roll with the punches, how to change with the times, how to set goals and how to succeed at the highest level, regardless of your chosen field or profession. This book’s unique treatment will include case examples exclusively of former star professional athletes who have made a successful transition from their individual sport to the corporate world. These case examples will include profiles of professional sports hall-of-fame players such as pro football quarterback Roger Staubach, pro basketball players Dave Bing and Bill Bradley, and pro football player Willie Davis.
