Leaders face numerous make-or-break crossroads in their careers, moments that can provide extraordinary learning and growth opportunities or trap leaders and prevent them from developing further. The good thing about these passages is that they’re predictable, and with proper preparation, leaders can survive them to become stronger. Dotlich and Noel lay out specific leadership passages, divided into four categories: Moving Up, Testing Yourself, Personal Turning Points, and Arriving as a Leader. For each passage, they describe what to expect and how to navigate it successfully, providing practical tools and techniques, along with real-life examples from recognizable leaders from Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Intel, GE, Bank of America, and others, as well as every day leaders to illustrate each. The passages: Moving into a leadership role for the first time Becoming a leader of leaders (middle manager) Putting all the pieces together (general management) Ultimate responsibility: becoming the CEO Dealing with significan t failure for which you are responsible Coping with competitive peers and conflict Confronting an ethical dilemma Working for a bad boss Derailing / losing your job Being acquired / merging Personal upheaval: divorce /death / illness Understanding the importance of children, family & friends Losing faith in “the system” Accepting your strengths and weaknesses Letting go of ambition / relishing the success of others Understanding and acknowledging your legacy Transitioning from work: wrapping up a career
