Identity theft is the stealing of sensitive personal or business identification information to make unauthorized purchases or cash advances. It is a growing problem that effects all businesses and has been identified by the FBI as the crime of the 21st Century. Long thought of as a crime committed by hackers accessing remote computers, the truth is that business employees who have access to sensitive business, customer, or other employee information perpetrate most identity theft fraud. Unlike most other types of fraud in which the business is the victim, identity theft fraud is a crime against the consumer and so requires a partnership between the business and victim (as well as law enforcement in some situations) to conduct a successful investigation.
Great Publicity Opportunties: Judith Collins is working with Dateline NBC on an upcoming episode where they will be following an actual identity theft crime investigation to conviction of the perpetrator. Book may be mentioned in segment. Collins is a highly-regarded expert on identity theft and is frequently interviewed by the AP, HR magazine, Security Management, and other media. Timely Topic: Identity theft investigation requires a partnership of the victim and the business where the theft occured, along with law enforcement officials when necessary. This book walks the reader through the investigation process, with practical, real-world guidance for each stage.
