Literally speaking, the word econometrics means measurement in economics. G.S. Maddala regards this definition to be too broad as most of economics is concerned with measurement. Maddala defines econometrics as the application of statistical and mathematical methods to the analysis of economic data, with a purpose of giving empirical content to economic theories and verifying them or refuting them.
