When an employee leaves an organization, that employee’s knowledge and experience are lost to the organization. Common sense would dictate that organizations would prepare for such a contingency by developing systems to preserve the critical knowledge of their departing employees. All too often, though, this is not the case, with management instead expecting replacement employees to get up to speed in record time. In a workforce culture increasingly characterized by job hopping, transfers, and sometimes sudden downsizing, the chronic loss of operational knowledge has become a key management concern. Continuity Management addresses the problem of knowledge loss, examines the importance of maintaining knowledge continuity, and provides an effective strategy for transferring critical operational knowledge. With this book, management can address this growing concern, increase productivity and foster continuous improvement. The book is divided into three parts: Knowledge Continuity in the Information Economy, which addresses the problem; Developing a Continuity Management Plan, which explores solutions; and Knowledge Asset Management, which provides step-by-step instructions on how to master the continuity management issues in any organization.

This book tackles a common but little-addressed management issue: how to preserve corporate knowledge when employees leave your organization. Other books on Knowledge Management address the topic as if the business environment were stable and static. Continuity Management assumes that the reader is working in a more realistic environment of rapid change and employee turnover.
Addresses a critical management need–minimizing the loss of knowledge that occurs when an employee leaves an organization. * Each author contributes expertise–corporate executive experience, leadership, and project management, among others. * Provides solid, prescriptive advice for implementing a plan of action to handle employee departures.
