One of the most complex, best run organizations in the world is the United States Army. And central to the Army’s success are strong leadership and exceptional leadership development. Army leaders must be able to act decisively and effectively in challenging situations. But the Army, despite the hierarchy of the military, does not train leaders in a command and control manner. Dispersed leadership is the key to the success of the Army leadership model. Now, for the first time, Be * Know * Do shares the Army’s highly successful leadership model with leaders across all three sectors. Based on the Army’s leadership manual, the book addresses three levels of leadership: direct, organizational and strategic. At the center of the book is the Army’s leadership framework, a clear and expressive description of what leaders must be, know and do in order to fulfill their responsibilities. This framework is adapted to fit the work of leaders in private, nonprofit and public organizations who face new and diverse challenges on a daily basis. Testimonials and examples from leaders in all three sectors show how the principles of the Be Know Do model work in the day to day lives of cross-sector leaders. Be * Know * Do will help readers develop organizations in which everyone is a leader and in which leadership is dispersed through every level of the organization. The book will also have a specific focus on leadership development, diversity, putting vision and values first, and leading organizational change.
