This book is about investing in what could well be the greatest opportunity in the 21st century. There is no comparable book that looks at the opportunity that is India from a wealth-creating perspective nor examines the depth of opportunity from a western perspective. This book offers no ponderous policy prescriptions nor pontificates in any way. It describes the opportunities and charts a course through them. It is for those people interested in a great new market but who may not know anything beyond what the newspapers say and lack an understanding of a very lucrative proposition. This book aims to take a gigantic leap in terms of a foreign investors understanding of where India stands financially and what its market represents in terms of an opportunity for them.

India is a young country with the median age of the population at 24.6 years. One third of the population is below the age of 14. This youthful population, increasingly educated, entrepreneurial and with rising disposable incomes are the fulcrum of the opportunity in India, driving demand for everything from cars, brand name clothing, cell phones, consumer electronics to real estate and a host of other goods and services, including insurance, health care and travel. Sectors that were once tightly controlled by the government are racing away at incredible growth rates after having been thrown open to domestic and foreign private investment and with the injection of competition. The fastest growth rate is coming from sectors that did not even exist or barely registered a presence a decade and a half ago, such as software services, information technology enabled services, automobile components, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, refined petroleum products and mobile telephony. The long run average GDP growth from the mid-1990s has now stepped up to 6.5%, from an average of 5% a decade-and-half ago and less than 3% over two decades ago. Annual average growth for the next few years is expected to be 7%-7.5%. This rate of growth is one of the fastest in world and the efforts underway to introduce the necessary structural changes that can raise growth rates further will turn India into a global economic power throwing up huge investment opportunities along the way. The opportunity unfolding in India is a function of the reforms enacted from the early 1990s as well as a result of Indias increasing competitiveness and confidence. The opportunity wrought by this change in corporate thinking and economic policy and practice is now intriguing corporations, fund managers and investors worldwide and will continue to occupy them for decades to come
India, along with China, is the greatest success story of current times. However, there are few credible books on the countrys economic and financial climate. The author offers revealing insights into the best investment opportunities. India actually provides a superior investment climate to China e.g. systems and technology at the Indian Stock Exchanges are superior even to those found in NYSE. India has a sustainable advantage over China in terms of its rich deposits of natural resources, excellent higher education, and English language skills. The author is based in Canada but travels frequently. He is available for interview in North America, Europe and Asia.
