People are using professional coaches more and more to assist them with their challenges at work, in the same way they use financial planners, personal trainers and therapists to assist them with their challenges at home. Coaching Leaders: Guiding People Who Guide Others derives from the author’s studies of leadership, counseling, creativity and personal change. Each chapter describes a different coaching concept, including emotional intelligence and appreciative inquiry which are new to the coaching literature, and case studies of White’s clients using the concepts to create change. The American Society of Training and Development estimates that organizationally-sponsored coaching is a $1 billion-a-year industry in the US. Coaching Leaders is written solely for the professional coaches, addressing the challenges facing the coach as a third party in organizational life. It focuses on helping coaches help their clients to become more effective in the specific and challenging aspects of organizational leadership.

Coaching is a rapidly growing profession. The number of coaches and clients has grown exponentially over the past five years. International Coaching Federation (ICF) has 7,000 members in 30 countries. Coachville has 40,000 members in 139 countries. Coach U has trained more than 7,000 coaches in 36 countries. NYU and New School University have begun to offer courses on coaching. Many of the new coaches (possibly up to half) are moving out of psychology and therapy and are turning to coaching. They need solid theory and practice to learn about the field. Coaching Leaders presents a theoretical background for executive coaching and adds more recent concepts such as emotional intelligence and appreciative inquiry. These are important topics that are new to many coaches. The author also provides case studies throughout the book. Together the theories and cases represent a comprehensive approach to coaching. Coaching Leaders gives new coaches the sound theory they need, as well as contributing new approaches for more experienced coaches.
