Networking in a business context simply means a social network (whether real life or online – ideally both!) where likeminded business people create and build upon new business opportunities. There are a number of formal networking organizations, such as 4Networking. A typical 4Networking event takes place over breakfast, lunch or dinner and consists of: 30 minutes of open networking (meet and greet, chatting over coffee and, presumably, some sort of pastry) 30 minute introduction round – everyone gets to introduce themselves to the room 15 minute speaker – a 4N member gets to talk about their business for 15 minutes Finally, a series of 10 minute 1-2-1s allow attendees to get closer to the people theyve identified as being most helpful to their business. 4Networking has a hugely active online forum with 75k members. They also have 300 local groups running 6,000 face-to-face networking events each year. They are growing fast and have launched 64 new networking groups already in 2013.
