Much has changed since the first edition came out in 1994. Not-for-profits are much more competitive, managed care has taken hold at the state and federal level, and radical changes in information technology have occurred. At that time, few people had email, and the world wide web was not a household word. In addition, the intervening six years have seen three four new Mission-Based Management Series books. The new edition of the core book, with its accompanying workbook that will be released at the same time, will expand on the ideas from all the books in the series, adding new ideas and new criteria for success. Each chapter starts with an Overview, then the main content, a Recap, and a list of questions for group discussion, and a checklist of things to do. As in all the other books in the mission-based management series, the chapters would be full of “for example” and “hands-on” sections, and written in a friendly conversational tone. Chapters include: Introduction; Where We Were, Where We Are, Where We’re Going; What Works: The Characteristics of A Successful Not-for-Profit; The Mission is the Reason; A Businesslike Board of Directors; Managing Your People; The Wired Not-for-Profit; Creating a Social Entrepreneur ; Developing a Bias For Marketing; Financial Empowerment; A Vision to Make the Future; The Controls That Set You Free; A National Agenda: Empowering our Not-for-Profits; Resources for Further Study.
