Much has been written on leadership but rarely has a book had the luxury of its authors being authorities on the subject, one from an academic point of view and the other as a tried and tested expert in the professional field. Their expertise takes a fresh look at the critical role of leadership in improving organisational performance. The core of this book is based upon previously unpublished materials that were developed for a variety of leadership development training courses. Leadership is a crowded market where there is little ground breaking material emerging from the field. The strength of this book is its distillation of the authors’ many years of experience in leading change management for improved organisational performance in one of the most well known and quoted examples of an organisation where radical change has occurred: British Airways.

The Authors illustrate how a leader can systematically create a business that is better at satisfying its customers, is more effective at using its human resources and more rewarding of its owners. To achieve this they take a detailed look at how a leader can best understand and quantify the pressures acting on the organisation from customers, shareholders and existing employees. It explains how the leader can set about formulating a vision and strategy for the business which will respond to these pressures. It then provides a prescription for defining the array of management practices needed to foster the organisational culture that is best able to facilitate the strategy. The heart of this book builds on the thinking and practice of BA but goes further to capture the realities and complexities of modern business.
