Islamic finance is a system of banking or financial activity that is consistent with Islamic (or Shariaa) Law, which, importantly includes Riba, the prohibition of the payment of fees for the renting of money for specific terms. Islamic Finance has seen massive growth in recent years, both in the demand for Shariaa Compliant services, and in the increase of Islamic financial products. Most institutions in the Middle East have some sort of Islamic offering, and research indicates that the number of these products will increase by 40% over the next three years. Western Banks are a growing force in MENA, where they are looking to grow their current businesses and develop new Islamic tools for these markets. However, there remains a real lack of understanding of the basics of the topic and of Shariaa Law.
