On entering the second decade of the 21st Century, Britain is in many ways the most globally engaged of developed nations. Whether it be financial services, value-added, innovative manufacturing, creative industries or our higher education sector, the UK really is at the top of the business pile. But if we continue to ignore both the economic and social issues by businesses in the wake of the global financial crisis, and an acceptance of what needs to be done, we shall watch this great country wither on the vine. Globalisation does not take prisoners. Is the UK smart enough to survive? A champion of UK PLC, Lord Digby Jones analyses the problems and opportunities for UK business, domestically and globally. He speaks out on a range of issues including: the move from manufacturing to value-added products and services; protectionism and the challenges of globalisation; taxation reform for enterprise; and fundamental reform of the public sector. Reflecting on his experiences as a Minister in Gordon Brown’s Government of All Talents, and his time at the helm of the CBI, Digby offers a common sense approach to government and business leaders for steering the UK back onto a winning course. It can all be so different. There is still time to fix it. 1 Five Minutes to Midnight – Time For Change 2 The Voice of Business 3 Around the World with Westminster’s Ball And Chain 4 Education, Education, Education? 5 The World Moves On – Can Britain Still Make the Most of Globalisation? 6 The Bad Business of Politics 7 Taxing Britain Out of Business 8 The Gimmie Society 9 My Creed For Our Great Britain
