The majority of emotional intelligence literature is focused on defining what it is, explaining why it is important, and discussing its impact on ones personal and professional effectiveness. This is the first work dedicated to offering specific exercises and activities designed to develop the skills of emotional intelligence, and which is cross-referenced to the four leading emotional intelligence models: Bar-On EQ-i (more than 1 million assessments sold), Goleman & Boyatzis ECI 360, Mayer, Salovey & Caruso MSCEIT, and the Orioli & Cooper EQ Map. Cross-referencing enables a broad audience of managers, HR professionals, facilitators, trainers, organizational consultants, and coaches to easily utilize the exercises in support of their model of choice. It is not necessary for coaches, trainers or facilitators to have administered any of the emotional intelligence assessments. But if they have, this book helps them leverage the feedback provided by the instrument and accelerate the impact of their improvement efforts. Outline of Contents and Chapter-by-Chapter Descriptions This is a three-part workbook with exercises, explanations, and cross-references to the four major EQ measures. The included exercises reference exemplars–real people and movie characters–to help people more easily recognize positive emotional intelligence behaviors. Part One Explains the impact of emotional intelligence on effectiveness in work and personal life, and highlights the comprehensive design that includes a cross-reference matrix of the four leading emotional intelligence measures. Part Two Introduces and discusses the 15 components of Emotional Intelligence. Part Three Over 45 Exercises (3-4 exercises per component). Each exercise includes: –Purpose: What the exercise focuses on and what will be accomplished –Outcome(s): Specific behavioral changes that will occur –Facilitator Competencies: Easy, moderate, or advanced –Instructions: Step-by-step instructions of how to perform the exercise –Handouts: Where provided these can be copied and distributed by the facilitator or coach.

When the Harvard Business Review published an article on Emotional Intelligence two years ago, it attracted a higher percentage of readers than any other article published in HBR in the last 40 years. Emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions so as to assist thought, to understand emotions and emotional knowledge, and to reflectively regulate emotions so as to promote emotional and intellectual growth – Mayer & Salovey. There is mounting scientific evidence to support emotional intelligence (EI) as a more reliable indicator of success in the workplace than other measures such as IQ and personality. While these measures are generally acknowledged to be fixed, emotional intelligence has proven to be a dynamic set of abilities and behaviors that can be measured (EQ), and developed and increased through training and coaching.
The first book to provide proven development tools and techniques aligned to the four leading Emotional Intelligence measures. Forward by Reuven Bar-Oncreator of the EQ-i assessment (2 million copies sold), and endorsed by Esther Oriolico-creator of the EQ Map assessment, Geetu Ormeco-author of Emotionally Intelligent Living and Steven Steinco-author of The EQ Edge. All three co-authors are certified EQ-i practitioners. Provides consultants and training professionals with easy-to-use and proven activities for working with others to strengthen EI behaviors. The coaching and training activities easily append to an existing leadership development program.
