Distinguishing Between Vision and Mission Statements
In simple terms, a vision statement talks about where a person/organization wants to be in the future in terms of growth, achievements, and development. It chalks out the things that need to be done in the present, while going forward in order to get there someday. While the former talks about the future, the latter stresses on building for the future, in the present. What to achieve and how to achieve it are two sides of the coin. With that said, vision statements are not something that only large companies, associations, or groups compose for themselves. Even a personal vision statement can be written by an individual in order to keep one in focus, either about a goal, or personal matter.
Writing a Vision Statement
To write a vision statement, one needs realistic foresight. It also requires full knowledge about the purpose for which the goals are being set. If the company heads are writing a vision statement; they have to ensure that they have complete knowledge about the working of the company, such as who the clients are, what the company is about, the different processes, strengths and weaknesses of the business, the direction that the company has taken so far - every tiny little detail.
The people in charge of coming up with a vision for the company sit in a room and imagine that they have been kidnapped, and they have just been released after five years. Here's where the real visualization begins. On returning to the company, they note massive changes in everything for the better. From the number of employees and the number and status of the clientèle, to the location of the offices and the areas in which the company has expanded - financial, geographic operational, etc. Everything reveals an upward moving trend that has been set in motion. Now, the extent to which these employees can envisage the all-rounded growth of the company is what has to be dwelt on pragmatically, and included in the long-term goals of the company.
Examples of Personal Vision Statements
Personal vision statements usually chart targets related to career, education, weight, interpersonal relationships, and matters of personal development, such as to socialize more, to be less selfish, and the like.
- I have shed 15 pounds, and couldn't be happier or healthier. I have also completed my higher education and cleared all my backlogs, where I'm one step closer to my dream job. (Written two years in advance)
- I ranked first in class today. The entire class gave me a standing ovation. My parents have thrown a party tomorrow to celebrate my achievement in the grandest of ways. (written four years in advance).
- I have quit drinking and smoking, finally. I've successfully completed the 12-step program, and took my therapist's advance about embracing life, and seeing smoking as a killer, and not something that I can derive pleasure from. Life itself, is what gives me a natural high, where I no longer have to depend on vices to be happy.
Think about what you want to do in life, what you want to achieve, and where you wish to be in 5 years, then write it down. Use present tense when you are writing a personal statement. Write as if you are in the moment after the target has been achieved. Add realistic nuances to the description such as your clothes, the people around you, the reaction of your parents, and your joy. The more vivid the picture, the greater will be the drive to turn your dream into reality.

Vision statements of organizations are very different from personal ones, owing to the sheer difference in the number of elements to be considered when setting a target. The dynamics, scale, and responsibilities are all different, and so the two cannot be similar in nature.
