Objectives and Key Results (OKR) has taken the business world by storm. But is this strategic framework STICK-ing and really making a difference? Here's how to make OKRs STICK in your organization.

S - Set the Foundation

For OKRs to work, you have to Set the Foundation correctly.  That means you have a clear starting line and context for your OKR effort. Your foundation needs to include corporate level OKRs designed to achieve your Big Vision, cross-walked against the four lenses of strategy - Financial, Customer, Business Process, and Organizational Learning.

T - Take the Time

For OKRs to work as sustainable tools to link strategy to results, you need to take the Time to do it right. Don't get into a hurry to be like Google. Don't put the cart ahead of the horse.

And don't set your sights too high right out of the gate. You are developing a muscle, which takes time and work.

I - Involve All Your Teams

OKR is more about bottom up input than top-down dictate. After all, who knows better how to measure results than the people who are doing the work?

For OKRs to STICK, everybody in the enterprise needs to see how they fit into the big picture and how their work contributes to the Big Vision.

C - Champion and Chief Executive Support

For OKR to STICK, you need an OKR Champion to marshal the effort and Chief Executive level support and sponsorship.

Perhaps more than any other criteria, the Champion and Chief drive the success, or failure of an OKR initiative.

K - Key Results Measure Outcomes, Not Outputs

OKR is about Key Results. For OKRs to drive your organization to the next level, you must focus on real Results measures.

You must measure impact, not input..outcome, not output. How? Get crystal clear on what it is that you are trying to achieve, how you plan to get there, and what success looks like.
