This book addresses the hard and soft issues of legacy and leadership in a wealthy family its objectives, challenges, organization, the people themselves, intergenerational transfer of wealth, challenges of managing a family enterprise, changes over time, family values, education and children’s behavior, along with other soft issues known more realistically as the even harder issues. With the crisis, there is a renewed value in a definition of family wealth definition and programme that goes beyond just money and supports a model of family leadership which is stabilizing, grounded, long term in thinking and based upon vast years of experience.
The recent crisis has highlighted the need for families to address the related issues of family legacy, family leadership and family risk management on a fully integrated and fully informed basis. Many families are now looking for a better approach to define and protect their legacies, clarify their philosophies of wealth, improve their models and principles of family leadership, and take a more engaged role with regard to the management of family wealth, risk and change. While making many adjustments, family leaders often want to continue to pursue the same long term goals of wealth preservation, a sustainable pathway forward for the family enterprise and a lasting approach to family unity and activity that ensures they are contributing to an enduring family legacy. By clarifying the unique content of a familys legacy, understanding a familys philosophy of wealth, defining an effective approach to leadership (and succession) and responding well to the constant challenges of risk and change, a few fortunate and well-led families will be able to beat the old curse of riches to rags in three generations. This is the first book to draw from a deep understanding of how the worlds wealthiest families have tried, with both success and failure, to preserve their legacies across time and through inevitable periods of turbulence and change. Enduring Legacy sets out practical advice, numerous examples and three fundamental frameworks for family leaders to provide guidance on the pathway forward, acting to support their own families to define legacy and clarify the philosophy of wealth, the establishment of an effective model of leadership and a new approach to the management of risk and change. The advice provided will allow a family leader to turn clear understanding into practical actions. The result will be a proven approach to family unity, long term vision, guiding values and true family wealth which is far more likely to preserve family unity and harmony, protect family wealth, preserve family legacy across succeeding generations and create a positive and lasting personal legacy of the successful family leader.
