There was a time when graduating with an advanced degree meant that you had a great chance at landing gainful employment at a very secure institution. Ph.D.s went on to be tenured professors, M.D.s went on to specialize and quickly pay off their school loans, and J.D.s went on to be successful attorneys. This is no longer the case. For example, in the United States, less than 30% of Ph.D. faculty members receive tenure. This is down from 42% in 1995 and 75% in 1970. M.D.s now leave medical school with an average debt of over $200,000 while making less than $50,000 as hospital residents. Due to new government regulations, M.D.s are also working 6% fewer hours than four years ago and treating nearly 17% fewer patients. Since 2008, the fraction of new J.D.s finding full-time jobs requiring a state bar license has dropped from 74% to 60%. Similar statistics hold true for professionals holding other advanced degrees, including Pharm.D.s, D.D.S.s, and M.B.A.s. Now, more than ever, these people need to reevaluate their current paths and overall purpose in life. The problem is that many of these professionals do now know, or refuse to know, where their career tracks are taking them. Black HoleFocus provides these professionals with a credible resource that outlines how to find a new purpose and achieve success both on and off a narrow advanced degree career track. The Guardian.
